5 Top Tips To Keep Your Hair Healthy This Winter

Winter has well and truly hit us, time to get out our jumpers, scarfs/gloves and boots! We know how to keep our bodies warm & protected from the cold weather but what about our hair? The freezing outside temperatures combined with the dry warmth from inside heating can cause our lovely locks to become split & damaged. Don’t panic… Follow our simple tips & keep your hair feeling soft/shiny & fabulous.

STOP THE STATIC…

Do you ever brush your hair in the winter only to be left with fine strands standing up all over your head leaving you looking as you have been electrocuted? Well, this is a very common sign of winter dryness. Although there are various static reducing sprays on the market these are all a con, they simply cover the problem by leaving a coating over your hair so the next time you shampoo the dreaded fly aways are back! The best way to reduce static is to add a leave in conditioner to your routine. Spraying the moisturiser to the mid lengths & ends of damp hair will help your hair stay hydrated, meaning no more static. (We recommend ‘L’oréal Professional Serie Expert 10 in 1 spray 190mls £15.90)

PROTECT YOUR SCALP, SHAMPOO LESS OFTEN…

Its not just your hair that suffers during the winter months. Your scalp becomes drier & itchier leading to problems such as dandruff & scalp tenderness. Reducing the amount of times you wash your hair weekly will help to improve this. The natural minerals of your hair can then do their job by hydrating your scalp & hair. Worried about your hair looking greasy? Dont worry, use a dry shampoo between washes or even better take advantage of winter fashion and wear a hat…

NOT JUST ANY HAT…

Winter hats are beautiful & at this time of year are in most high street shops. However, don’t just pick up any old one. It may look lovely but it could be doing more damage than good. Wool, cotton and acrylic can cause your delicate strands to snap. Invest in a hat with a silk lining, not only will this protect your hair from breaking it will also last longer than your cheaper ones. Added bonus right? If you struggle to find a hat you like (or cannot bear to part from your favourite one) do it yourself, simply sew a silk scarf into your hat creating a lining & barrier for your hair.

PUT AWAY THE STRAIGHTENER…

Okay, we don’t mean put them right away but try to cut down on the use of them & any other heat styler. The added heat will cause a lot more damage to already delicate hair. When you are styling your hair using heat always use a heat protector. This will make a huge difference, with most providing a shield against temperatures up to 220 ‘c.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

Use a professional, moisturising shampoo/conditioner & oil. This is one of our most important tips. Cheap shampoos are often made with up to 80% water, not only this but can be full of nasties such as parabens & silicones. Using professional products will help your hair in the winter months but also all year round. Argan oils ( such as our favourite L’oréal Professional Mythic Oil 100ml £16.50) help to restructure your hair, use daily on wet or dry hair & you will start to feel & see a huge difference. Our recommended shampoo/conditioning duo for this cold time of year has to be L’oréal Professional Serie Expert Absolute Repair. (Shampoo 300ml £12.50 Conditioner 200ml £13.50) Working together these will transform your locks from dull &dry to soft & shiny leaving your with gorgeous healthy hair others will be envious of.
